For the first time in the history of Indian Air Force (IAF),the life of the Alpha India-20 engine of helicopter has been increased by 1,000 hours. This was done by 3 Base Repair Depot,Air Force Chandigarh in 2013.

“The aero-engine life extension has been done for the first time in IAF,it has never been experimented with in civil as well as the industrial segment. With this invention of 3 Base Repair Depot in 2013,the engine will work for two more years and around Rs 100 crore of money has been saved,” says Air Commodore Suresh Singh, outgoing Air Commanding Officer,3 BRD on Monday.

“An extensive study has been carried out by air warriors as well as nationally recognised laboratories in India. They have synergised all the knowledge, skill and expertise of the Indian industry and have increased the life after conducting a large number of tests and they are confident that helicopters will give full life,” he said.

The 3 BRD has been maintaining the presidential helicopters for last 40 years, with no incident of accidents. “A large number of studies are carried out for enhancing the life and 3 BRD will keep maintaining the aircraft and enhancing its life,” Singh said.

Further,he said that the 3 Base Repair Depot,Air Force plans towards becoming self-reliant in the coming 10 years. “Presently co-ordination amongst research institutes, academic institutes, manufacturing industries and Indian Air Force is on process. We have already initiated the process and hope to accomplish the mission of being self-reliant,in the coming 10 years,” says Suresh Singh.

He added,“Government and private agencies have responded positively to the requirements of this depot in terms of assistance in developing indigenous technologies to resolve the issues. This has helped in huge saving to the exchequer in foreign exchange. The depot continues hard in its progress towards self reliance in all production activities.”

Suresh Singh rejected the suggestion that 3 BRD has got a poor response from companies. He says,“A large number of companies from foreign as well as India have been visiting us and we have already started upgrading business. Large number of industries from Chennai and in and around Chandigarh are doing a good job for us.”
