Twenty-two acres of forest area in the Gatti Hari-Ke area of Makhu sub-tehsil has been grabbed by a few influential people in connivance with the revenue officials of Makhu. Reportedly, nearly 900 fully grown acacia trees have also been chopped in the area. The market value of the land has been estimated to be more than Rs 5 crore.

The Forest department had 114 acres of dense jungle in this area,of which 22 acres have been grabbed. The matter was reported by the district forest officer (DFO) to Deputy Commissioner Kamal Kishore Yadav in January, but nothing happened.

Sources said the revenue officials have registered the land under the name of nine persons,of which one is Amanveer Singh, son of SAD leader Karaj Singh, the chairman of Makhu market committee. As per the Forest officials, the registry was done in January first week and they came to know about it a few days later. The matter was immediately reported to the DC.

Forest officials have indicated all political links in their complaint sent to the DC and hence have urged an early action. DFO Mahavir Singh said,“We have also produced a challan in the Zira court against chopping of trees, for which compensation worth Rs 10 lakh has been sought.”

Forest officials also procured the chopped trees from five persons, who were hired by the SAD leader and an FIR was registered against them. But nothing significant happened in that regard as well. DC Kamal Kishore Yadav said,“Inquiry is being conducted. I cannot comment as of now.”
