The UT Police on Tuesday arrested an 18-year-old resident of Ram Darbar Phase I for allegedly vandalising an unguarded ATM machine of Bank of Maharashtra.
Police said that around 3 am,a barber, who lives in a house in front of the ATM machine, alerted the police control room (PCR) about the sound of something being smashed in the ATM kiosk.
Krishan said that he was sleeping on his terrace, when he heard a loud noise. He saw a masked man allegedly break the ATM machine and trying to steal cash, said a police official.
A PCR vehicle reached the spot 15 minutes after the control room was informed. By that time, the accused had already left. The police then claims to have received a secret information that Sagar had allegedly vandalised the machine, following which he was arrested by the police from his residence.
Sagar was detained by the police on Tuesday morning. While questioning, the accused confessed that he had broken the ATM machine screen with a brick. The accused claimed that he was alone when the incident took place. He allegedly tried to steal some cash, but he noticed someone watching him,so he fled, the official added.
According to the police, the accused had been arrested before for several crimes.
The regional manager said that the bank had outsourced the installation and security of ATM machines to a Mumbai-based firm. Chandigarh region in-charge of the firm said that there was no security guard deputed for that ATM.
