A 17-yr-old boy jumped into the funeral pyre of his girlfriend who had set herself on fire last week after her parents refused to accept their relationship. The Haryana Police has registered a case of suicide.

The incident took place in Rori village of Sirsa district on Monday. Veer Pal Kaur,a student of Class IX,and Bittu Singh,a student of Class XI in the same school, had known each other for the last few years and wanted to marry, though they were underage. While the girl was a resident of Sirsa,Bittu was from a village in Punjab.

Told by her parents that they would never accept Bittu as their son-in-law,the police said,Veer poured kerosene over her body and set herself on fire on November 26. She was rushed to the Sirsa civil hospital where she succumbed to burns on Monday. “Bittu came to know of the incident and rushed to the cremation ground. When Veer’s family members left the ground after performing last rites,he jumped into the pyre, which was still burning,” said one of the investigating officers.

The police said the girl’s family found remains of two bodies in the ashes, after which they informed the police.

Sirsa Superintendent of Police Satinder Kumar Gupta told The Indian Express that it was a case of suicide as it had been established that the boy jumped into the pyre.
