Among the 150 students taking the re-appear tests at Panjab University (PU),more than 100 failed — 70 per cent — in the Literary Criticism paper of first-year MA at the Department of English and Cultural Studies.

The results took the students by surprise,as after the introduction of semester system and internal checking, answer sheets are evaluated by department professors only. Among the four teachers who take classes for two sections of the first semester, two were evaluators in the examination.

The faculty members blamed it to on the deteriorating quality of students being enrolled, declining cut off percentage in entrance examinations, fall in the number of applications received for the course and also on the same courses being offered in colleges.

“This course is offered by almost all colleges in the city. Moreover, due to the selection criterion of the university, the number of applications has also gone down. On the contrary, the number of seats has increased. As a result, seats have to filled up with the available candidates. Similar is the case with other departments as well,” said a professor of the department.

The faculty members also claimed that most students can hardly clear internal assessments. Recently,a similar case of mass re-appear was seen in the Department of History.
