According to the police, Jaya had previously submitted an application alleging domestic violence against her husband Kalpesh, his parents, his brother and sister-in-law. (Representational)A 24-year-old woman jumped into the Umariya dam with her two daughters in Gujarat’s Dahod district Saturday, resulting in the death of all three, said the police.
The Limkheda police in Dahod recovered the body of the woman, identified as Jaya Baria, and one of the daughters, Pragya, 5, Monday evening. They retrieved the body of the other daughter Megha, 2, on Saturday itself. They sent the bodies for autopsy and began an investigation into the alleged suicide.
The woman’s family accused her husband Kalpesh and in-laws of domestic violence. According to the police, Jaya, a resident of Timba village in Limkheda taluka of Dahod district, had previously submitted an application alleging domestic violence against Kalpesh, his parents, his brother and sister-in-law, and moved to live with her parents in Kundali village.
Jaya’s family claimed in its application to the police that following the previous complaint against her in-laws, the panchayats of Timba and Kundali had intervened and “settled the discord”, after which Jaya had returned to live with her husband.
On March 17, a day before she took the extreme step along with her daughters, Jaya allegedly called her father and complained about “mental torture due to constant fights” at the house. Jaya’s father Shana Pandor demanded an investigation into his daughter’s death.
