A 22-year-old street vendor was on Wednesday arrested for allegedly tearing Lord Rama’s banners put up in Karnataka’s Kolar district in view of the Ayodhya Ram temple inauguration, and the BJP targeted the Congress government over the incident.

Police said they identified the accused, Zaheer Khan, after examining CCTV footage from two villages near Mulbagal town where tension prevailed after the banners were torn on Tuesday night.

“The banners were put up in connection with the Ram Mandir inauguration in Ayodhya and also as part of the Makar Sankranti festival. Using sharp objects, Zaheer cut the banners put up in the Jahangir Mohalla and Gungunte Palya villages around 10.45 pm on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning, hundreds of members of a right-wing group protested demanding action,” a police officer said.

Kolar BJP MP S Muniswamy and Mulbagal JD(S) MLA Samruddhi V Manjunath also visited the area, the officer added.

Muniswamy alleged that such incidents were on the rise after the Congress came to power. “We want to know who is supporting these miscreants and there is an increase in such incidents in the state,” the BJP leader said.

BJP state president Vijayendra Yedyiurappa wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “The heinous act of tearing Prabhu Sri Rama’s banner at Kolar as nation anticipates holy Sri Ram Mandirs consecration is a reflection of barbaric mindset nourished by radical ideology. This disturbing trend underscores the Congress government’s ideology of hate against Prabhu Shri Ram and its potential consequences on the Hindu community, demanding resolute intervention. I urge the Kolar police to act swiftly to safeguard law & order, especially given the recent provocative statements from Congress ministers against Ram Bhakts.”
