The city experienced heavy rainfall at the beginning of the monsoon season and continued to receive significant rainfall in the following months. (File photo)Throughout the current monsoon season, Bengaluru Urban district experienced 20 per cent higher than normal rainfall, as reported by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC). Overcast conditions with light rain are expected to continue until Thursday, followed by widespread rainfall for a few days in the city.
The recent heavy rainfall during the monsoon season has filled the state’s reservoirs nearly to capacity, including the recently repaired Tungabhadra Dam. Currently, the 14 major reservoirs in the state hold 96 per cent of their total capacity, with 856.41 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water out of a gross capacity of 895.62 TMC.
Between June 1 and September 7, Bengaluru Urban district received 387 mm of rainfall, which is 20 per cent above the average of 324 mm for the same period. The city experienced heavy rainfall at the beginning of the monsoon season and continued to receive significant rainfall in the following months. In Belagavi district, the highest deviation in rainfall was observed, with 756 mm of rainfall received, representing a 53 per cent excess compared to the average of 496 mm.
The total rainfall in Karnataka has been 890 mm, compared to the average of 725 mm. South interior Karnataka received the highest rainfall at 353 mm, exceeding the average of 256 mm. In the coastal districts, which typically receive the highest rainfall in the state, the total rainfall this monsoon season was 3,456 mm, compared to the normal of 2,890 mm.
Last year, reservoir water levels suffered due to drought conditions across the state. This year, however, the dams are full due to heavy rainfall. For example, at the Tungabhadra Dam, around 30 TMC water had to be released, as a crest gate was damaged due to a broken chain link. Less than three weeks after the gate was fixed, the Tungabhadra dam was holding 101.77 TMC water, while its full reservoir level is 105.79 TMC, according to data.
