The Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) is considering transitioning the Common Entrance Test (CET) for professional course admissions into a computer-based test, said Higher Education Minister and KEA Chairman Dr M C Sudhakar on Saturday.

Speaking at the KEA office in Malleshwaram, after awarding certificates to candidates who qualified in KCET-23, he said that studies have been conducted on computer-based common entrance tests in Maharashtra and a few other states. “Implementing CBT for CET will require significant infrastructure. The final decision will be taken after considering all the pros and cons. The government will need to invest more in the infrastructure required for computer-based examination systems. There is also a need to consider whether the resources will be fully utilised,” he said.

Sudhakar mentioned that they observed a CET demonstration conducted in a computer-based format in Maharashtra. He added that rural students face several challenges in filling out the CET applications, often having to go to cyber cafes and making many errors in providing details such as educational qualifications and reservations. “To prepare students for the CET application process, an app is being developed. It is almost in the final stages and will be launched soon,” said the minister.

Additionally, Sudhakar said there is a plan to facilitate the application process at the college level. He added that the government will prioritise appointing those who qualify in KCET as assistant professors once the finance department approves it. He said efforts will also be made to reduce the gap between sanctioned posts and guest lecturers in the coming days.

KCET-2024: Exam on November 24

On the same day the certificates were awarded for KCET 2023, Sudhakar also released the notification for KCET-2024. Applications can be submitted from July 22 to August 22. The last date to pay the application fee is August 26. The minister announced that the exam will be conducted on November 24.

No Permission for Private Universities

Replying to a question on establishing new universities, Sudhakar said there is no intention to allow the establishment of new private universities in the state. Sudhakar stressed that the focus will instead be on research and quality education. The decision came after the government found it difficult to allocate sufficient funds for the seven new universities set up by the earlier BJP government at the end of its tenure.

Decision After Supreme Court Order

Dr Sudhakar said the Supreme Court is conducting an inquiry regarding the NEET irregularities, and the CET counselling schedule will be announced after the final order. The state follows a procedure of conducting joint counselling for engineering and medical courses, which is more convenient. Hence, he said they are waiting for the Supreme Court’s verdict.

Expressing dissatisfaction with considering only NEET scores for medical course admissions, the minister opined that 50 per cent of the marks from the qualifying examination (second PUC) should also be considered for ranking.
