Another case was registered against seven people for allegedly smuggling beef. (Express File Photo) The Bengaluru Rural police arrested 23 people after a group waylaid vehicles that were allegedly transporting beef to Bengaluru, and assaulted the occupants, police said.
Of those arrested in the incident, which took place on Sunday morning at Doddaballapur in Bengaluru Rural district, 16 were workers of the Sri Ram Sene and seven were alleged beef smugglers.
According to police, the Sri Ram Sene workers stopped six vehicles, of which one was torched. Videos purportedly showing the vehicles, the assault and the alleged smugglers being paraded have been widely shared on social media.
Bangalore Rural SP Mallikarjun Baldandi said the incident took place around 5.45 am on Sunday.
Six vehicles allegedly carrying beef from Hindupur, Andhra Pradesh, were stopped at T B Circle, Doddaballapur. The occupants of the vehicle were assaulted by members of the Sri Ram Sene, the SP said.
Police have registered three cases. One was against 16 Sri Ram Sene workers for assaulting the alleged smugglers and setting a car on fire. Another case was registered against seven people for allegedly smuggling beef.
