The Karnataka Bar Council Tuesday decided to drop Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar from the list of chief guests for a two-day conference to be held in Mysuru. The decision was taken after BJP MLA and former minister S Suresh Kumar wrote to the Council objecting to the participation of Shivakumar, citing the pending cases against the Congress leader.
The two-day Advocates Conference will be held in Mysuru from August 12 in which Supreme Court Justice A S Bopanna, Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Prasanna B Varale, and others will participate. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to inaugurate the program.
Suresh Kumar had written to the Registrar of the Karnataka High Court objecting to Shivakumar sharing a dais with the Justices as there were several cases pending in the Supreme Court and the High Court against the Congress leader. “Is it correct for such a person to share the stage with judges? The Bar Council must answer,” he had said.
Following this, the Karnataka Bar Council issued a revised invitation for the event sans Shivakumar.
Responding to the developments, the Dy CM said that the Bar Council was welcome to take any decision. “I do not want to embarrass them… I want to ask one question. Why did he (Suresh Kumar) not object to B S Yediyurappa attending such events when he was CM? He too was facing many cases,” Shivakumar said.
