The much-delayed flyover project at Ejipura in south Bengaluru – which is often the butt of jokes on account of the delay in its construction – is expected to be completed by June-July of 2026. Maheshwar Rao, Chief Commissioner for the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), has indicated this during interactions at multiple forums in recent weeks.

On Friday, the GBA chief commissioner said at an event organised by the Indian Institute of Interior Designers and the Bengaluru Chamber of Industry and Commerce that the flyover work, which has resumed, was progressing well. “By June, we hope to complete the flyover,” he said.

The Ejipura flyover, a 2.38-km elevated corridor with entry/exit ramps on the Inner Ring Road and the Koramangala Kendriya Sadan near the Hosur Road Junction, is intended to streamline the heavy traffic flow between Inner Ring Road and Koramangala to the National Highway on Hosur Road.

The officer had previously indicated that the completion of the Ejipura flyover, which was expected to be opened in March 2026, should be realistically targeted for June 2026.

During an event of Bengaluru Political Action Committee in July, Rao, who was then the BBMP commissioner, stated the project is being closely monitored by a dedicated team with work progressing steadily amid technical and logistical challenges.

“If we look at a production rate of 30 segments per month, the work could technically be completed in five months. But factors like casting capacity and workforce levels might affect that timeline,” he said in July. Land acquisition has also been a source of delay for the project.

The route where the Ejipura flyover is coming up is used by IT workers and others from East Bengaluru to reach workplaces like the Electronic City in south-east Bengaluru that houses major tech firms.

Work on the flyover, which began in 2017 when the Congress was in power, was stalled for nearly five years during the tenure of the BJP (2019-2023) and was resumed in November 2023 when the Congress party came back to power.

It was originally scheduled for completion by November 4, 2019, at an estimated cost of Rs 203.20 crore. The project’s cost has now skyrocketed to Rs 1,761 crore.

Simplex Infrastructure, the first contractor awarded the tender, received multiple extensions but failed to deliver on time, leading to the current contractor, BSCPL Infrastructure Ltd, taking over the project in November 2023 with a 15-month deadline, which has seen multiple extensions.
