The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) on Wednesday assured 21 IT parks in and around the Mahadevapura area in the southeast regon of the city that it is ready to supply Cauvery water for drinking.

The IT parks in the area heavily rely on borewells and the company representatives requested Cauvery water from the board in a meeting with BWSSB chairman Ram Prasath Manohar.

Manohar responded to the request and said, “We have managed to address the water shortage faced by IT companies. Now, several companies have requested Cauvery water. We are prepared to supply water in the fourth stage of the scheme.” The BWSSB began Cauvery water supply Stage 4, Phase 2 in 2012, supplying 500 million litres per day (MLD) to meet Bengaluru’s water needs. The Stage 5 project is underway and is set to be completed this year.

The official said the 21 IT parks will require 12 MLD of water, and 5MLD can be made available in Stage 4. “However, they need to pay the pro-rata charges and other fees. If you agree to pay the required fees, we can arrange water supply in 30 days through pipes. We can supply more water when the fifth stage becomes operational. The rest of the demand can be met through treated water,” Manohar said.

He also emphasised the usage of treated water and encouraged the companies to use it for at least 50 per cent of their water requirements. He also suggested that the IT Parks reuse grey water, which is the water apart from toilets that is easy to treat.

Outer Ring Road Companies Association vice president Archana Tayade, secretary Ramesh Venkataramu and general manager Krishna Kumar Gowda attended the meeting.
