A 20-year-old man died on Sunday night after a scooter he was riding fell into a 10-ft pit dug by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board.

Saddam Hussain, a resident of JJ Nagar, met with the accident while riding a scooter with his friends Umran Pasha and Mubarak Pasha along the Kommaghatta road near Bengaluru’s Kengeri satellite town.

The road was dug up by the board to lay a Cauvery water pipeline, but Saddam Hussain did not notice the pit. After their scooter fell into the pit, the trio were taken to hospital by passersby. Hussain sustained head injuries and was declared dead on arrival by doctors. Umran and Mubarak are undergoing treatment.

The Kengeri traffic police have registered a case. A police officer said, “Prima facie it was found that there was no barricade or any other safety measures in place for the road users.”

Ram Prasath Manohar, chairman of the board, said that it was an unfortunate incident. “All the measures were taken before carrying out the work. The police have initiated investigations and we will look into their report and take appropriate action if needed. I have directed officials to speed up the work,” he said after visiting the accident spot on Monday.
