One of the victims of the fire that occurred at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in the Arpora village of North Goa on the night of December 6, where 25 people were killed, was a 25-year-old Bengaluru-based data analyst who had gone on a leisure trip with friends to Goa.

Mohammed Ishaq, who was born and brought up in Bengaluru and lived in the North Bengaluru region of Thanisandra, was the elder of two sons of Mohammed Hussein, a salesman. He was laid to rest this week.

Ishaq is suspected to have died of asphyxiation from the fumes or a stampede at the nightclub, as his body was reported to have had no major burns.

Ishaq’s family, however, was not sure of what exactly happened, even as reports suggested that he died after re-entering the nightclub to recover a mobile phone after initially exiting the premises.

“What has happened has happened. Our son has gone, and we know the pain,” Hussein said, following the conclusion of the final rites.

Hussein said he had spoken to Ishaq on Saturday night and enquired about his well-being and that his son had reported having a good time with his friends before indicating that he would call again the next day.

Ishaq, who was a commerce graduate from the Presidency College in Thanisandra, had been working with a multinational investment bank in Bengaluru over the last three years. He went to SVM English School in Thanisandra, his father said.

Ishaq’s body was dispatched on a flight to Bengaluru on December 7 after due process, and family members who arrived in Goa to identify the body were sent by a car organised by local authorities, officials in Goa said.

It was a call from a relative on Sunday about the probable presence of Ishaq among the victims of the fire at the Birch nightclub that alerted his father to the tragedy. The death was confirmed following phone calls to officials in Goa and Bengaluru, the family said.
