The police suspect a chemical reaction going wrong while conducting a bitumen extract test for asphalt as the reason behind the fire in which nine were injured. (File/ Special arrangement) The Halasuru Gate police in Bengaluru have issued a notice to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) chief engineer B S Prahlad to cooperate in the investigation into the fire at the civic body’s quality control laboratory in which nine people were injured Friday.
According to a source, the notice served to Prahlad is aimed at securing his cooperation in the investigation. This will likely involve granting access to relevant files and sharing information pertinent to the case. The notice does not require his immediate appearance for questioning. The BBMP had already formed a committee to investigate the fire accident and submit the report.
The police on Saturday questioned three BBMP employees and released them on station bail. They are assistant executive engineers Ananda, Swamy, and D Group worker Suresh Kumar. Prahlad had filed a complaint seeking a thorough examination of the fire accident. The police have also recorded statements of the victims receiving treatment at a government hospital.
The BBMP revealed the three employees were named in the First Information Report (FIR) since they were not injured in the fire. They were queried about the procedures followed during the test, their presence at the time of the accident, and how they managed to escape without sustaining burn injuries. After their release, they will also undergo further questioning by Prahlad.
While Prahlad is gathering preliminary information about the incident, his visit to the lab has been postponed due to the area being cordoned off by the police. The office space has been sealed by the police for investigative purposes to ensure the preservation of evidence and prevent contamination.
