(Express photo)In a bid to maintain cleanliness and respond to growing public complaints, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced stricter enforcement of its rules, including levying of fines, against those using chewable tobacco products on its premises.
The move aims to curb spitting and littering on Metro premises and trains, which are often linked to the consumption of such products. To tackle the problem, BMRCL will enhance security measures during non-peak hours by intensifying patrols and surveillance.
“Offenders caught consuming or spitting after using chewable tobacco products will face fines, as per BMRCL regulations,” the metro rail corporation said in a press statement.
Given that chewable tobacco products cannot be detected by metal detectors, BMRCL will now conduct random physical pat-down checks at all Metro stations. Platform security personnel are being sensitised to identify potential offenders, while the central surveillance room has been directed to monitor passenger activity closely and alert station staff of any violations.
Alongside these enforcement measures, BMRCL is also set to launch an awareness campaign to educate commuters about the importance of maintaining hygiene and the harmful effects of using tobacco in public transport settings. “The initiative seeks to encourage public cooperation in keeping Metro spaces clean and ensuring a pleasant travel experience for all,” BMRCL said.
