The government had withdrawn the earlier notification issued by the BJP government on increasing the wards from 198 to 243. The Urban Development Department (UDD) Friday night notified the draft copy of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) ward delimitation based on the 2011 census. According to the notification, which is considered to be a prelude to the BBMP elections, the number of wards has been increased to 225 wards from the present 198 wards.
The Urban Development Department said that any objection regarding the delimitation should be submitted to the office of the department within 15 days from the date of publication of the draft.
The draft contains the names of all 225 wards along with their boundaries. The government had withdrawn the earlier notification issued by the BJP government on increasing the wards from 198 to 243.
The Congress had objected to the previous delimitation exercise conducted during the last government’s tenure. The Karnataka High Court on June 19 had given 12 weeks time to the state government to undertake a fresh delimitation exercise.
Once the delimitation exercise is completed, the ward reservation will be announced after which the BBMP elections could be held. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy had earlier announced that the BBMP elections would be held by the end of 2023.
The BBMP has been functioning without an elected council since September 2020.
