Clearing the air over his resignation, suspended IPS officer G L Singhal booked in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case Wednesday said he hasnt been approached by the state government for the verification of his resignation letter, while adding that he was firm on his decision and not going to take it back.
Singhal along with retired deputy superintendent of police J G Parmar were produced before a special CBI court on Wednesday after their remand in CBI custody ended. The court sent them to Sabarmati Central Jail in judicial custody till March 8. Singhal was the first policeman arrested in the encounter case.
Singhal was arrested by the CBI on February 21 in connection with the encounter case in which a group of policemen from Detection of Crime Branch (DCB),Ahmedabad, had gunned down 19-year-old Ishrat Jahan, her friend Javed Sheikh and two others on June 15,2004. Singhal was then assistant commissioner of police with the DCB.
When asked about the suspicion expressed by the state government over his resignation from Indian Police Service,Singhal told reporters outside the courtroom,I have not been communicated by the government in this matter. Let them approach me over the issue… but I am not going to take my decision back.
Last week,Singhal had tendered resignation from his service and vented his anger for not being protected by the state government. However, following his resignation, the government reacted saying that it is verifying the signature of Singhal.
