Two persons were injured when members of two communities clashed and threw stones at each other near Champaner Darwaza in Vadodara after a vegetable laari (a shop on handcart) owner allegedly refused to move his vehicle when asked to do so by another vendor.
Eye witnesses said their verbal duel turned into a clash when one of the vendor took out a knife threatening to kill the other. People from both the communities turn out on the street and started pelting stones from both sides.
Police brought the clash under control soon after it erupted but it left a couple of autorickshaws parked in the area damaged. A government school nearby the area was closed soon after the situation was brought under control.
Meanwhile,city police commissioner Satish Sharma called in a peace committee meeting involving leaders from both the communities that were attended by two BJP MLAs,Bhupendra Lakhawala and Jitendra Sukhadia,mayor Jyotiben Pandya,VMC standing committee chairman Vijay Shah,former Waqf Board chairman Ganibhai Qureshi,social worker Bafati Shah Diwan,social worker Amin Saiyed,among others.
Among other things,the leaders discussed the ways for peaceful celebration of the Lord Ganesh festival.
