Two get life in prison for kidnap and murder

A local court here on Thursday convicted two persons and sentenced them to life imprisonment,while acquitting six others in the 2006 case of abduction and murder of the son of a city-based jeweller.

The district and sessions court of Rajkot pronounced Ashish Nanda and Salim Khafi alias Salon guilty of kidnapping and murder,and sentenced them to life in prison. However,the court acquitted six others,including a woman,for want of evidence.

Piyush Thakkar (17),son of a city-based jeweller was kidnapped by the accused in July 2006 from near Shahstri Maindan in the city. The accused then took him to a forest area in Jasdan taluka and stabbed Thakkar to death when their demand for ransom was not met. The accused,all residents of Jamnagar,later burnt the body of the teenager and police could recover only some remains.

Later Naresh Katarmal alias Sarap,one of the accused,was killed in an encounter on the outskirts of the city.
