The Ahmedabad Sessions Court,on Tuesday, convicted three persons for dowry deaths and sentenced them to rigorous imprisonment for 14 years and 10 years respectively. The three accused include husband Niraj Shukla,father-in-law Devnarayan and mother-in-law Ramadevi of the 23-year-old deceased woman (Dipa),who had set herself on fire owing to incessant dowry demands,in 2007.

The court has convicted the three accused under various provisions of the IPC and Dowry (Prohibition) Act.

Niraj has been awarded imprisonment for the maximum term of 14 years, while his parents have been sent to imprisonment for 10 years each. The court has also ordered a compensation of Rs 25,000 to Dipa’s father.

According to the details of the case,Dipa had committed suicide in May 2007,a few months after her marriage, when the three accused started harassing her over dowry.

Initially,Dipa’s parents fulfilled the dowry demands, but later they became unaffordable for them. As Dipa’s parents failed to fulfil the dowry demands, she committed suicide.

Public Prosecutor Bhavesh Patel said that Dipa had committed suicide by dousing herself in kerosene at her in-laws’ house in Bapunagar.

“Though, the defence had contended that Dipa died in the accidental fire that occurred due to a short-circuit,the court rejected their contention,” he added.
