Wtih temporary lecturers at M S University threatening not to carry out assessment work of the students as they were recently “demoted” and given pay scales of temporary teaching assistants, varsity authorities say the only solution now is to fill up the vacant posts with permanent lecturers.

According to a memorandum submitted last October,of the 1,203 sanctioned posts,451 are still vacant of which 399 have been filled up with temporary lecturers.

University teachers representing temporary lecturers had submitted a memorandum on September 22,2010. It said there were many lecturers working in the temporary positions on year-to-year basis for the past 12 years.

Vice-Chancellor,Ramesh Goyal said: “M S University is a grant-in-aid university, which is also funded by the Government of Gujarat. They have approved the appointment of temporary teaching assistants for Rs 16,000 to Rs 17,000 monthly salary. The only solution now will be to fill up the vacant posts in the university.”

Incidentally, teachers from across all faculties will be staging a demonstration in front of the vice-chancellor’s office on April 21.

A teacher from the Faculty of Commerce said on the condition of anonymity: “We urge the university Registrar,M M Beedkar to join in the protest so that the government understands the gravity of the issue. There are teachers who have served this university for 20 years or so as temporary lecturers. No Provident Fund is deducted from their salaries, which is a violation of the Provident Fund Act of Government of India.”

The temporary lecturers have further said in a letter to Chief Minister Narendra Modi that the payment of the temporary teachers is not at par with the permanent lecturers, which is a violation of University Grants Commission’s notification number F3-1/2009 dated June 26,2010.
