Surat forensic lab set to get ISO certification

The Forensic Science Laboratory in Surat is likely to become the first such unit in the country to get ISO 17025 certification from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL),New Delhi.

The Forensic Science Laboratory in Surat is likely to become the first such unit in the country to get ISO 17025 certification from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL),New Delhi.

FSL officials have now completed the groundwork for the certification. All the necessary information about the quality of work carried out with their results has been forwarded to NABL in New Delhi.

Sources in Surat FSL said that NABL is an autonomous body under of Department of Science & Technology,Government of India. It was formed with the objective to provide third party assessment of the quality and technical competence of testing and calibration laboratories to the government,industry association and the like.

Surat FSL Deputy Director S M Darjee said: “We have sent all the details to the NABL,and a team from there will come to Surat soon to conduct a surprise check to ascertain the veracity of the information provided to them. The officials will pay their second visit a few months later.”

He added: “With such certification,Surat FSL will be first regional office to have ISO 17025 certification. The FSL results will be accepted everywhere in the country and elsewhere.” Surat FSL will also start a cyber crime section on the lines of those at Gandhinagar and Hyderabad. A proposal in this regard has been sent to state Home Department. “The work is at a primary stage. We are waiting for the Home Department’s clearance,as we already have experts in this field.”

A new FSL office at Valsad is also in the pipeline. It would function under the Surat Regional Office. Initially,only prohibition and possession tests will be carried out here.
