After Chief Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to Indias first education minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on Monday,Congress leaders in a haste organised a programme to remember the great leader,who worked under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi during the freedom struggle and served as the countrys education minister under prime ministership of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
Leader of Opposition in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Badruddin Sheikh,Congress MLA from Daryapur Gayasuddin Sheikh and Congress councillor from Sarkhej Haji Asrar Mirza were among the few local Muslim leaders,who gathered at the Ganj Shohda cemetery in Danilimda,and held a programme for the Holy Quran recitation to pay tributes to Maulana Azada. They also distributed jalebis amond kids.
Later,while speaking to mediapersons,Badruddin Sheikh demanded naming of the under-construction overbridge in front of the Indian Institute of Management- Ahmedabad (IIMA) after Maulana Azad. He said it would be the fittest tribute to him as the bridge was located in front of the countrys leading management institute and Maulana was credited with revolutionising the technical and professional education by setting up IITs in the country.
Councillor from Sarkhej ward Haji Asrar Mirza also wanted the CM to name one of the state universities after Maulana Azad or set up a new university after him.
