State board follows CBSE pattern,no one to fail Class XI science exam

After being the first state to give its approval to join centralised medical entrance examinations,Gujarat is now following the Central Board of Secondary Education pattern for Class XI and XII Science streams.

After being the first state to give its approval to join centralised medical entrance examinations,Gujarat is now following the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) pattern for Class XI and XII Science streams.

In addition to the objective of reducing stress levels among aspiring engineering and medical candidates, the move is aimed at improving the state’s success rate in national institutes including Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

It has divided the Class XI and XII exams into four semesters and 75 per cent of these examinations are based on the objective format.

No student will be declared fail in Class XI with the introduction of percentile ranks and grades which will form the basis of admission in engineering and medical institutes.

“These changes have been implemented keeping in mind the national level entrance examinations (JEE main and NEET) for engineering and medical institutes. This will also reduce difference between Class XII state board and entrance examination results,” Principal Secretary Education Hasmukh Adhia said.

The students appearing for Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) This year,Class XII examinations will have 50 per cent objective questions unlike entire examination based on subjective pattern. Semester one and third will be entirely objective while 50 per cent of the remaining two to have objective questions.

Students will appear for their third semester examinations from October 25 onwards while the last semester will be in third week of March next year.

The state education department has also done away with the proportionate quota for CBSE and other boards students in engineering and medical institutes. For instance, over the last years around five per cent proportionate quota has been earmarked in state engineering institutes for candidates who have completed their Class XII from CBSE. However, the CBSE students expressed their displeasure in the new pattern as this would limit their choices in various engineering branches offered by the institutes.

From this year onwards, after Class XII,all students irrespective of the boards will have equal opportunities in all the streams and institutes as apart the entrance exams result percentile ranks.

Decoding the new semester code

Curriculum and exams of Class XI and XII are divided into four semesters

Final result will be based on average of all the four semesters rather than final board exam of Class XII

No student will be held back in Class XI

Final results will be in percentile ranks and grades
