Policeman gets 5-year jail for injuring shop owner

The Ahmedabad Sessions Court on Tuesday convicted a policeman and sentenced him to five-year imprisonment for causing grievous injury to a person following an accident on the Relief Road in 2007.

The Ahmedabad Sessions Court on Tuesday convicted a policeman and sentenced him to five-year imprisonment for causing grievous injury to a person following an accident on the Relief Road in 2007. The convicted was posted in the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) as head constable when the incident had occurred.

According to the details of the case,complainant Qamaruddin Pathan runs a paan shop on Relief Road. He had filed the complaint after Shaikh beat him up over an accident row in which his nose got fractured.

Pathan had lodged a complaint in the Metropolitan Court after the Karanj police did not lodge a complaint against Shaikh. After this court acquitted Shaikh and the judgment was challenged in the Sessions Court.

Additional Sessions Judge R H Sharma held Shaikh guilty and awarded him five-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000. The court also asked Shaikh to pay Rs 35,000 to the complainant as compensation.
