Police said they dug out the carcass with the help of reserve forest officials on Thursday evening after an unidentified person called up the Surat (Rural) police control room and said a carcass was buried near a temple at the village in Mangrol taluka.

Police suspect that bird might have been killed at some other place as no blood stain was found at the spot.

The carcass has been sent to the government veterinary hospital in Mangrol for postmortem, officials said, adding the bird appeared to be three-years-old. Reserve Forest Officer N B Vasava said,“We found that the bird was killed for fun and not for meat. There are many peacocks in Mangrol,Mandvi and Mahuva talukas in Surat district that come out in open fields during monsoon. Some notorious elements might have spotted the bird and killed it. We have asked our informers to find out who is involved in it.”

Veterinary doctor N M Patel said,“Seeing the injury marks,we believe that some notorious persons might have used a catapult or a blow that hit the bird on the neck. The meat was found intact.”
