Twenty-four hours after the first case was reported, doctors and forensic experts remained inconclusive about the substance contained in the country-made liquor that allegedly killed three villagers and took 20 others seriously ill at Panej.

The Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Vadodara did not found presence of methyl alcohol in the 22 blood and urine samples of the affect people. “All the samples have been tested negative for methyl alcohol. The compound that the affected people consumed contained some other poison,” said A A Yogi, assistant director at the FSL.

“Since we do not have facility to conduct tests of other poisons, samples of stomach wash and viscera have been sent to FSL in Surat,” said D B Talati, deputy director of Vadodara FSL.

Doctors at SSG Hospital were also not certain about the line of treatment. “We are treating the affected people for suspected organophosphorus. We shall be able to ascertain the exact cause of the deaths and illness only after postmortem reports of the three dead are available,” said Dr Rajiv Deveshwar,Superintendent,SSG Hospital.

Meanwhile, additional director (health) Dr Paresh Dave rushed to Vadodara today and held a meeting with the hospital superintendent and other top officials of the district administration. “I was not on any specific mission. The visit was only to support my colleagues here. The Medical Superintendent and other doctors have been doing a fantastic job,” Dr Dave told The Indian Express.

His visit assumes significance as 11 affected people had to be shifted to Sterling Hospital. However, the Dr Dave denied that the decision was taken due to lack of adequate facility at the government-run SSG Hospital.

“There are certain numbers of ventilators at SSG. But the number of patient was high and to provide maximum people the best treatment, the district administration decided to shift them to Sterling Hospital,” said Dr Dave.
