Two weeks after RTI activist Nadeem Saiyed, also a witness in the 2002 Naroda Patiya massacre case, was murdered in Juhapura area, the police on Saturday arrested Mohammad Sharif alias Kalu Gardan and six of his aides from Naroda.
Sharif, who earned the moniker Kalu Gardan for allegedly killing people by slitting their necks, had been absconding since Saiyeds murder on November 5. The activist was stabbed 25 times.
The police, which had earlier picked up and questioned externed gangster Mehboob Senior who allegedly warned Saiyed not to depose in the Naroda Patiya case, have now changed their line, pointing to the possible involvement of Kalu Gardan in the murder.
According to police,Saiyed earned the ire of butchers in Juhapura after his campaign against illegal slaughter houses there.
Nadeem was murdered by Kalu Gardan and aides who came in a car. They had information that after offering his morning namaaz,Nadeem came to the tea stall to read newspapers, DCP Crime Himanshu Shukla said.
Sources said the police are still looking for one Mushir Ahmed from Juhapura who is said to have given a contract to Kalu to eliminate Saiyed.
After killing Saiyed,Kalu and his aides are said to have fled the area in their car. Later, they left the car in the city and went to Viramgam, from where they proceeded to Udaipur,Ajmer and then to Muzzafarnagar in UP. The car was later seized by the police.
Today, they were spotted in Naroda area where they were nabbed, the police said.
The hostility between the butchers and Saiyed reportedly flared up on October 24,when a police party raiding a slaughter house in Juhapura was waylaid by a mob which torched one of its vehicles.
In the crackdown that followed, the police picked up 30-40 persons.
Saiyed feared the butchers, who blamed him for the police raid, could target him. After the incident,he had even met Police Commissioner S K Saikia apprising him of the threat he felt.
Besides Kalu and his aides, police are also looking into the role of a newspaper boy,Aijaz Khan, who had taken a profusely bleeding Nadeem to the hospital in an autorickshaw .
Aijaz had claimed he did not see the murder, though he was feet way from the crime scene.
