Continuing with their crackdown on bootleggers,Junagadh police arrested 28 bootleggers including 14 women on Monday.

According to Junagadh police officials,482 raids have been carried out across Junagadh district in the last seven days in which over 500 people have been booked under the prohibition law.

According to the police, the bootleggers take the help of women to sell liquor. “Women are a safer bet because they by nature are not known to be adventurous,” said a police official.

Most women bootleggers come from economically weaker sections of society and in most cases one or more male members of their family are also involved in the illegal liquor business.

“They are extremely needy and bootleggers exploit their helplessness to involve them in the liquor trade,” said a police official.

Most of these women involved in the liquor trade come from the coastal belt, where there is an utter lack of employment opportunities. “Also,in those areas many women above 40 suffer from tuberculosis and become weak. So it can also be said that circumstances force them into this business,” said sources in the police.
