GSRTC plied 1,207 buses to ferry people for govt functions,still waiting for payment.

In the election year of 2012,the state government hired 1,207 buses from GSRTC,more than double of 544 buses it hired from the corporation for similar uses in 2011,according to a written answer submitted by the road and transport department in reply to a question asked by Viramgam Congress MLA Dr Tejashree Patel on Thursday.

The government is yet to pay the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) Rs 97.58 lakh for the buses it hired to ferry people to various functions relating to its two flagship programmes,Sadbhavana Mission and Swami Vivekanad Rojgar Saptah,in Ahmedabad last year.

Total expenses incurred by the government on transportation for its various functions during the past two years was over Rs 1.46 crore. These functions included Sadbhavana Mission,Mata Yashoda Award distribution,Swami Vivekanand Rojgar Saptah,Garib Kalyan Mela,Sarpanch Mahasamelan and workshops for Gram Panchayats and ministers.

The road and transport department,in its reply,said it could not clear the outstanding dues of over Rs 93.58 lakh to GSRTC since the code of conduct had come into force before the December 2012 Assembly elections.

On the other hand,GSRTC has taken a loan of Rs 376.42 crore from the government. The corporation owed the government a total of Rs 1,306.72 crore till December 2012,which includes loan interest,passenger tax and motor vehicle tax.

So far,GSRTC has paid Rs 327.70 crore,according to a reply by the road and transport department to a question by Congress MLA from Una Punja Vansh.
