9,500 cases of ticketless train travel in Nov
The officials of the Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway detected nearly 9,500 cases of ticketless travel,irregular travel and taking luggage without booking,in November. This led to the recovery of Rs 31.95 lakh,said a Western Railway release on Saturday. As many as 53 cases of illegal transfer of reserved tickets were detected and Rs 26,205 was realised.
During the same period,109 beggars and unauthorised hawkers were apprehended,out of whom 10 were evicted from railway premises and 90 were charged. An amount of Rs 24,300 was realised as railway dues. Nine persons were prosecuted and Rs 450 was recovered from them towards fine.
Catholic monthlys centenary celebrations on Monday
The centenary anniversary of the Gujarati Catholic monthly Doot will be celebrated at the St Ignatius Loyola Church premises on Monday. The function,to be presided over by the Gujarat Governor Kamla Beniwal and Bishop of Ahmedabad Thomas Macwan,will host prayer ceremonies,a cultural programme and an exhibition of Doot one copy of each edition of the periodical is still intact at the Anand Press where it is printed.
The copies of the very first and the most recent issues will be given to every one attending the function tomorrow, said Father Vinayak Jadav,the convener of the centenary celebrations committee. Doot,first published at The Examiner Press,Mumbai in January 1911 with 12 pages,has now grown to 48 pages with 5200 subscribers in five Indian states and four countries.
Its first editors being German Jesuits,Swiss and Spanish Jesuits succeeded them before Indian editors took charge in 1956.
The periodical has had non-Christian contributors as well,and the editorial team shall be inviting a host of prominent non-Christian Gujarati writers for its December 2010 edition,former editor Simon F Parmar said.
St Alphonsas relic installation today
A relic of the first Catholic Indian woman saint,St Alphonsa,will be installed at the St. Ignatius Loyola Church at Naranpura in Ahmedabad on Sunday morning. This will be the first installation of St Alphonsas relic anywhere outside her birth-state of Kerala. A relic of a saint is,according to Catholic tradition,the mortal remains of a saint kept in a suitable place in a church, Father K C Matthew SJ of St Ignatius Loyola Church said. St Alphonsa,a Catholic nun of the Syro-Malabar order was a nun under the Franciscan Clarist Congregation near Kottayam,Kerala. Bishop Rev. Dr Thomas Macwan will solemnize the installation on Sunday morning.
GNLU signs MoU for solar energy development
The Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) has signed an MoU with the Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University to focus on the development of solar energy and laws governing the renewable sources of energy.
The MoU,which was signed to boost academic and scholarly exchange is expected to fructify into an International Conference on Solar Energy Law in November 2010,a release said.
GNLU director Bimal Patel said there is a strong need for a speedy evaluation of the energy efficiency and security status of the nation in general and Gujarat in particular.
Two bodies found
Two decomposed bodies were found floating near Kotarpur Water Works in the Sabarmati River between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar on Saturday. The bodies have not been identified yet but police suspect the deceased were in their early twenties.
PSI J M Katadia said,The bodies are of a young couple. We suspect it to be a case of suicide but murder is not ruled out.
Man stabbed in public toilet,accused at large
A man was allegedly stabbed in a public toilet by two persons at Hirawadi Crossroads at Bapunagar in Ahmedabad in the late hours of Friday. The accused are absconding.
The police said that the victim,Ramesh Rathod,was in the public toilet when the two accused identified as Roshan and Dinesh came there. The accused allegedly made some comments on Ramesh,which led to an altercation. The duo took out knives and sharp tools and stabbed Ramesh on the stomach and head and slit his throat,the police added.
Preliminary investigation by the Shaherkotda police have revealed that the victim had no rivalry with the accused. The motive behind the attack is not clear,said the police.
Rathod was admitted in the Civil Hospital where his condition is reported to be critical.
The police have registered a case of attempt to murder and booked the duo under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code. Further investigations are on.
