Two girls attempted suicide by jumping off the Subhash Bridge in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. The Sabarmati police said Sangeeta Bariya (17) — a resident of Mansarovar at Chandkheda and a student of Gayatri Vidyalaya — and Kailash Damor – a student of Parimal School – consumed poison prior to the jump. The two friends were tensed about the upcoming board exams,the police said,adding that the Fire Brigade rescued them from the Sabarmati and took them to the Civil Hospital for treatment.

The police have registered a case of attempted suicide and taken up further investigations. In a separate incident,Harsh Nai (15),a resident of Gopalnagar in Pandesara area in Surat,hanged himself from the ceiling at his home on Monday. Harsh was a student in Sharda School in Pandesara. Police said this is the second incident in the state this year. Police said Harsh’s father Vasudev was at work while his mother had gone out to collect water when he took the extreme step. Inspector K M Gohil said,“After talking to his parents,it seems Harsh was tensed over the exams. He was behaving oddly in the past few days and was not talking to his parents. He was depressed as he feared that he wouldn’t be able to clear the exams.”

Management event held at NICM
Gandhinagar-based Shri Jairambhai Patel Institute of Business Management and Computer Applications (formerly known as National Institute of Cooperative Management-NICM),organised a day-long management event — ‘Advitiya-2010’- A state-level business plan competition. Harish Khemani of Tolani Institute of Management Studies,Adipur,bagged the first prize.

Youth asks pillion to get off,gets shot
Angry with his friend’s refusal to take him to Ahmedabad city on his bike,a Dholka youth fired at his friend near Aslali in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. The accused,Raju alias Ganesh Pokodiwala,is absconding,police said. The Aslali Police stated that Raju and his friend Baldev Rajput,both residents of Dholka,were travelling to Ahmedabad on a motorcycle. On the way,when Baldev saw that Raju was carrying a loaded pistol,he refused to drive further and told him that he won’t drop him at Ahmedabad. Both got into an argument and then Raju fired at his friend. Baldev sustained an injury in the shoulder and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

The police have registered a case of attempt to murder under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code and under the Arms Act. Further investigations are in progress.
