Surat to have water sports facility on Tapi

SURAT: A proposal about developing facility for water sports on the Tapi near Weir-cum-Causeway at Singhanpore is in the final stage and will soon be sent to the state government for approval.

The water sports project was planned by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) last year and it received green signal in the standing committee meeting.

The civic body officials have prepared the proposal as per the guidelines of the Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board (GIDB).

Source said a Mumbai-based company named Aquatic was approached by the SMC for the activity and it has even submitted a project report.

The company in its report has mentioned that it will put 12 different types of boats for enthusiasts. Sources say the SMC will have a share in profits from the activity. M D Daruwala,Deputy Engineer of the SMC,said: “We sent the project report to the GIDB two days ago. The project will be forwarded to the concerned ministry. Once we get green signal,we will start water sports in Surat.”

Remembering the titan

Recounting Prabhash Joshi’s contribution to Indian journalism,a meeting was organised by the Gandhi Peace Foundation Centre at the Gujarat Sahitya Parishad on Saturday evening. Recollecting the memory of the founder editor of Jansatta,veteran journalist Prakash Shah said Joshi was almost like Kabir to Hindi journalism. A recorded lecture by Joshi,during his stint as the Resident Editor of The Indian Express,Ahmedabad,was also played at the meet.

Tejinder Singh,station director of Doordarshan,Gujarat,said speakers at the meet highlighted different aspects of Joshi’s journalism and everything will be compiled in a book.

CEPT student gets best research paper award

AHMEDABAD: Union Minister for Urban Development S Jaipal Reddy on Saturday conferred best research paper award to Lavinder Walia,a student of the CEPT University for her master degree thesis on urban transport. Walia has completed her Master of Planning under the guidance of Prof H M Shivanand Swamy,associate director of CEPT. An official release issued from AMC said Walia received the award along with Prof Swamy at India Habitat Center in New Delhi during the valedictory function of the second International Conference,Urban Mobility India,2009. Theft at film producer’s house

VADODARA: In a house break-in at the residence of a film producer of Gujarati film industry on Saturday morning,an amount of Rs 5.13 lakh was found stolen. The incident took place at the residence of Govind Patel,a Vadodara-based Gujarati film director and producer who has his residence at Fatehgunj area. As per police records,the incident occurred between 10 am and 12 noon when unidentified people broke the interlock of the main door to enter the house.

Man injured after autorickshaw hits car

AHMEDABAD: One person was injured when a speeding autorickshaw allegedly crashed into a luxury car on Thaltej Road early on Saturday.

Sola police said that Jayanti Parmar was coming in his autorickshaw from the Gujarat Science City Road when he lost control and hit a stationary BMW car with the driver still inside. Parmar fell off his vehicle upon impact and was rushed to the civil hospital with severe injuries.

The car received minor damages only. A police case under sections 279,337 and 304 of the Indian Penal Code,and Sections 177 and 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act,has been registered against Parmar.
