Gulberg witness contradicts statement to SIT
AHMEDABAD: A 70-year-old witness in the 2002 Gulberg Society massacre case contradicted her previous statement to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Wednesday.
Mariam Bibi Sandhi deposed before the Special Court of Sessions Judge B U Joshi that she did identify any of the accused in the mob that attacked the society on February 28,2002,while she was moving away to safety. Sandhi was residing in one of the chawls near Gulberg Society when riots broke out in the area.
Defence lawyer Mitesh Amin said Sandhi had earlier named two persons,Naran ‘Channelwalo’ and Lallu,as part of the mob,during her deposition before the court.
The prosecution has not declared Sandhi as hostile.

Philatelic show to start on Dec 18
VADODARA: The Baroda Philatelic Society is organising the first national one frame philatelic exhibition in the city. The three-day exhibition,which will commence on December 18,will be preceded by a heritage walk on Thursday,which will be flagged off at Head Post Office. The exhibition has received over 448 entries from across the country. The exhibition will also have participants from the United States,the UK,Germany and Malaysia among others. Interestingly,Royal Mail Service — UK will also be putting up their exhibit and setting their stall at the exhibition. During the exhibition,over 45 stamp dealers from India,the US,the UK and Malaysia will be putting up their booths.

Play at Shreyas school
VADODARA: STUDENTS of Fergusson College,Pune and Forum Deutsche will perform a German play on Thursday. The play – Wer wird denn unsereinen liebe? (Who will love me?) – is an adaptation of a Marathi short story by Vijay Tendulkar. The play will be staged at Shreyas High school at 7.30 pm.

Workshop on autism
VADODARA: THE city-based NGO,Disha Charitable Trust,will host a three-day workshop starting Thursday for teachers and parents on Autism. The event will be held at the Guru Narayana Seminar Hall,Baroda Management Centre,Old Padra Road from 9 am onwards. ENS

Two accused of siphoning money from bank employee’s account
AHMEDABAD: Two persons from Bhopal,Madhya Pradesh have been accused of siphoning cash from the account of a Punjab National Bank accountant employed with the Ambawadi branch in Ahmedabad,through Internet banking.
The Ellisbridge police said the accused,Mohammad Rahim and Ravi Sharma,both residents of Kayastgali Ginnori and Barkhedi in Bhopal respectively,were temporarily staying in Ahmedabad.
The two accused siphoned off Rs 50,050 from Ramesh Patel’s account through the Internet on Wednesday,they said.
The police have registered a case of theft and fraud against the two accused and taken up further investigations. No arrests have been made yet.

‘First Nano from Sanand likely to roll out in June’
THE first Tata Nano car from the Sanand plant is expected to roll out in June next year,while the first body paint will be done in March,said Andreas Stedfeld,MD of Durr India Pvt Ltd (DIPL). Durr has developed the body paint shop for the car.
Stedfeld said this after announcing a strategic partnership with the Gujarat Chemical Association (GCA) here on Wednesday. The company had built about 60 per cent of the paint shop in Singur,West Bengal,but had to transfer the entire plant after the Tatas decided to move their plant to Gujarat.
“Almost 70 per cent of the body shop was commissioned. We dismantled the entire plant and brought it to Sanand,” he said,adding that 520 truckloads of material were brought to Sanand,about 2,500 kms from Singur. DIPL also has Volkswagen and General Motors at Halol as its customers.
The company is also into designing and implementing solutions related to environment and energy systems.
