Hooch tragedy: Opposition continues to hold ‘mock’ Sessions in state

The ghost of the lattha tragedy refuses to die down for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the Opposition continues to hold ‘mock’ Assembly sessions in various places across the state.

The ghost of the lattha tragedy refuses to die down for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the Opposition continues to hold ‘mock’ Assembly sessions in various places across the state.

The Opposition Congress plans to conduct one such ‘mock’ Assembly Session here on Monday morning near the Town Hall.

Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil cited the denial to raise the issue in the state Assembly as the reason for holding the ‘mock’ Assembly.

He said the regular suspension of its members from the House proceedings on different occasions during the ongoing session was an attempt to prevent the Opposition from raising its voice.

Now,through the medium of ‘mock’ Assembly Sessions in various cities and regions across Gujarat, the Congress will discharge its duty of giving voice to the people’s problems as a responsible Opposition,Gohil said.

He added: “When an incident of lattha tragedy occurred in 1989,the then government had put aside all technicalities and allowed the then Opposition,of which the incumbent Speaker was also a part, two hours time to discuss it.”

At that time, the incumbent speaker had showered the government with all sorts of allegations and accusations, but now, when the Congress is just asking time for a mere discussion on the floor of the House,it is being denied its democratic right,Gohil said.

According to Gohil, whenever such a major

development takes place,

a resolution for adjourning the Session is passed, and the issue is taken up in

all detail, and the Opposition is allowed to freely

discuss it.

He said till now the Opposition was allowed discussion on 27 occasions in the history of Gujarat Vidhan Sabha.
