HC orders status quo on eviction at Aslali

The Gujarat High Court Monday ordered that status quo be maintained with regard to local authorities’ move to evict 164 families in Aslali village of Daskroi taluka to develop Aslali lake.

The Gujarat High Court Monday ordered that status quo be maintained with regard to local authorities’ move to evict 164 families in Aslali village of Daskroi taluka to develop Aslali lake.

The order came on a public interest litigation moved by People’s Union of Civil Liberties along with a group of people who were given eviction notice by the local mamlatdar.

Petitioners’ lawyer said the 164 families have been living around the lake for several years and that the mamlatdar gave them notice of eviction in August last year without any alternate accommodation.

Even as they replied to the notice, the mamlatdar gave them a final notice in February to vacate the place by March 5,following which the PIL was filed. Villagers have sought alternate accommodation on the lines of Sabarmati Riverfront Project.

A bench of Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice J B Pardiwala has kept the matter for further hearing on Wednesday.
