Gujarat: Sub-inspector dies in line of duty while attempting to nab bootleggers

The incident took place around 2.30 am on Tuesday on the road between Kathada village and Dasada town of Surendranagar district, where the SMC had set up a team to intercept a car ferrying illegal liquor across the “dry state”.

According to details provided by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) KT Kamariya, the SMC team had set up a blockade and was awaiting the vehicles in which the suspected bootleggers were transporting the alleged liquor. The team spotted a Creta car and a trailer truck headed towards breaking through the police barricade.

The team noticed that a Fortuner car, belonging to the SMC, was following the two vehicles at full speed. During the chase, the trailer hit Pathan on the head, said officers.

Pathan was immediately taken to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Dasada and then moved to the Sub-District Hospital at Viramgam in Ahmedabad district where he was declared dead by the doctors.

A case pertaining to bootlegging has been filed at Dasada police station.

DIG Nirlipt Rai, who heads the SMC, said, “It is with deep regret that we inform of the passing of SMC PSI Javed Pathan, who lost his life in a road accident while pursuing a suspected liquor-carrying vehicle near Dasada, Surendranagar. The post-mortem has been completed, and the body will be taken for the last rites.”
Later in the evening, Gujarat Police offered the guard of honour to the deceased police officer.
