Guj set to get Rs 1800-cr loan from NABARD this yr

Under the Saurashtra Narmada Avataran Irrigation (SAUNI) project,which will cost Rs 10,000 crore,surplus water from Narmada river will be taken to 115 dams in the Saurashtra region.

“We are expecting around the same amount as last year to be disbursed to the state. The bulk of the soft loan will focus on infrastructure,irrigation and water supply. We should be able to sanction the funds or at least a part of it by May,” said H R Dave,the chief general manager of NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) at its regional office in Gujarat.

Water supply and irrigation use up major part of loans given by NABARD from its Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF).

In the financial year 2011-12,NABARD had advanced soft loans of Rs 780 crore to the state government. In 2012-13,the amount was more than doubled,to Rs 1700 crore.

In a release,NABARD said it had increased its credit operations in Gujarat by 43 % during 2012-13 compared to the previous year.

The total refinance and loan support to banks and state government under its various schemes in Gujarat increased from Rs 4340 crore during 2011-12 to Rs 6215 crore during 2012-13.

Cong plans Jal Adhikar Yatra against new Bill

State Congress on Friday announced to take out a 12-day Jal Adhikar Yatra from April 10 against the Gujarat Irrigation and Drainage Bill 2013 passed in the state Assembly recently.

Addressing mediapersons,state Congress president Arjun Modhwadia said that by bringing in the new law,the BJP government had taken away the rights of the people over underground water and authorised the canal officers to arrest the farmers and seize their equipment for violations.

Senior Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil criticised BJP president Rajnath Singh for visiting the drought-hit areas of Maharashtra,which has a Congress government,while overlooking the drought-affected districts of Gujarat.

Senior party leader Siddharth Patel said the march would cover 22 talukas of nine districts in Saurashtra and North Gujarat regions most affected by drought. The yatra would commence from the religious town of Dwarka on April 10 and end on April 21 at temple town of Ambaji after covering 1267 kms. The yatra will cover the districts of Jamnagar,Junagadh,Porbandar,Rajkot,Surendranagar,Amreli,Bhavnagar,Patan and Banaskantha.
