Vadodara District health officials on Saturday slapped two notices on the Waghodia Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) after a three-year-old girl died of gastroenteritis and 58 others were found with similar symptoms. The notices were issued after the Public Health Laboratory report confirmed the consumption of contaminated water to be the cause of the outbreak. The presence of Coliform bacteria in potable water is the cause of gastroenteritis, the report said. In the notices,we have asked them to immediately repair the leakages in the water channels and chlorinate the drinking water. It has been found that the water pipeline was breached in many areas, which led to the contamination. Besides,GIDC was not chlorinating the water regularly, said Dr Bhagwat Itare,Chief District Health Officer,Vadodara. The district health department has deployed 16 teams of medical officers in the affected area. On Saturday,224 people were treated. Of these,24 people were suffering with diarrhoea, seven with vomiting and two patients complained of both. Itare added: A control room at the Waghodia Primary Health Centre (PHC) has been set up to expedite the treatment.
