The wife of former chief minister Amarsinh Chaudhary, Gajraben, has been elected as the president of Tapi district panchayat. In Dangs district, there was tie between Congress and BJP but on Tuesday afternoon, the BJP became the ruling party after it got the support of one Congress member.
Gajraben, 76, has been contesting Tapi district panchayat elections for the last five terms from Dolvan seat in Tapi district. She has been winning all this while. She has worked at Balpore Primary Healthcare Centre as Gram Sevika for a few years. She left her job after she got married to Amarsinh Chaudhary.

Chaudhary’s first wife, she has also served as chairman of the Education Committee in Tapi district panchayat for the last two consecutive terms. The Tapi district panchayat was under Congress after getting separated from Surat district. In the recent Tapi district panchayat elections on 26 seats, Congress won on 21 seats while the BJP won only five seats. For the last two terms, Congress has been ruling the Tapi district panchayat.
During the last term, Mavji Chaudhary was the president of district panchayat. Mavji lost his seat to the BJP in the recent elections.
The Congress workers celebrated her new post by taking out a rally.
Tapi district Congress president Raju Gamit said, “After the defeat of Mavji Chaudhary, we were thinking about the suitable candidate for the post of president. Considering the experience of Gajraben, we have decided to give her the post. The vice-president’s post has been given to Raman Tadve, who contested for the first time from Nizar seat.”
