Flood eases,hundreds return home in Vadodara

As many as 17,000 people had to be evacuated from Bharuch district alone on last Saturday,following heavy rain in the catchment areas of Narmada dam.

Flood water from villages and other low-lying areas in Bharuch,Vadodara and Narmada districts receded,bringing much relief to hundreds of evacuees who were finally able to come out of the relief camps set up by the district administration and return home.

As many as 17,000 people had to be evacuated from Bharuch district alone on last Saturday,following heavy rain in the catchment areas of Narmada dam. Villages located along the banks of the Narmada river in all three districts were affected and people had to be moved to safer areas.

Bharuch resident additional collector R S Ninama said most of the 17,000 displaced persons had returned. “We have some 1,000 persons,who are still staying at relief camps,but others have gone back as water has receded. We are trying to clean up all the slush and mud,” he said.

Apart from city areas,nearly 30 villages were flooded due to heavy outflow of water from Narmada dam since Saturday last week. As many as 30 residential localities in Ankleshwar were also affected due to flooding,but water had gone back,officials said.

In Vadodara,situation is normal,and most of those shifted have gone home,disaster management officials said. Water level at the dam was measured at 126.78 metres and is gradually receding.
