Fee hiked in self-financed colleges

The Fee Regulatory Committee on Tuesday announced an increase of 10 to 40 per cent in fee for various courses in 428 self-financed professional technical educational institutes in the state.

The Fee Regulatory Committee (FRC) on Tuesday announced an increase of 10 to 40 per cent in fee for various courses in 428 self-financed professional technical educational institutes in the state.

The increase applies to tuition fee, library fee, laboratory fee, computer fee and caution money. The hike is valid for three years, that is,for academic years 2011-12,2012-13 and 2013-14,said Director of Technical Education (DTE) I B Peerzada during a media briefing at L D College of Engineering.

However, the fee structure for each of the three years is different, with an increase of five to six per cent every year. Also, the fee structure for different institutions varies based on the location of the institutes, availability of infrastructure and the nature of the courses offered by them.

According to Peerzada,no other fee can be claimed from students and any violation by the colleges would be dealt with strictly. He said that old students would not be affected by this raise as it was only for the students taking admission from this academic year.

He said the hike was considered owing to huge increase in the cost incurred by the self-financed institutes in terms of heavy increase in payment of annual salary to the staff, establishment and maintenance cost of laboratories and buildings among others.

The salary cost alone had increased by 66.6 per cent due to implementation of the sixth panel recommendations and recurring cost by 33.3 per cent in almost all the institutions.

Peerzada, who is the secretary of FRC headed by retired Gujarat High Court judge Akshay Mehta, said the committee had to keep in mind the interest of both the parents and the institutes and arrived at a solution acceptable to both the parties.
