Days after three persons were arrested by the Surat Police after fake Indian currency notes having a face value of Rs 9.36 lakh were found in their possession, the Surat Special Operation Group (SOG) on Friday arrested another person with such notes having a face value of Rs 2.9 lakh.
The police identified the man as Sadikali Shahpor Pathan (30) from Umarwada at Salabatpura in Surat. His name came up during questioning of the men arrested on May 21 – Feroz Shah (46), a resident of Limbayat in Surat, Babulal Gangaram Kapadiya (41) from Ujjain and Shafi Khan (53) from Dewas in Madhya Pradesh.
Shah, the main accused, used to run a now-defunct YouTube news channel from his office, where he was also printing the counterfeit notes.
According to the police, Sadikali said he came in contact with Feroz Shah six months ago. “Sadikali Pathan runs a second hand automobiles brokerage business and came in contact with Feroz, who posed as a journalist. They became friends and a month ago, Sadikali told Feroz that he needs money for some emergency,” said an officer.
“Looking for an easy way to circulate counterfeit notes, Feroz gave him fake notes of 200 denomination, having a face value of Rs 4 lakh, as well as genuine notes worth Rs 1.5 lakh. Later, Sadikali repaid Feroz Rs 80,000 while assuring that he would pay the remaining amount after some time,” the officer added.
Surat SOG Inspector A P Chaudhary said, “During interrogation, Feroz had said that he gave the fake currency to Sadikali. We have arrested Sadikali and seized fake notes having the face value of Rs 2.9 lakh. Sadikali claimed that he had received only this much from Feroz.”
“We are looking for the remaining fake notes and also trying to find out if there are others who had taken such notes from Feroz,” Chaudhary added.
