Polishing units in the diamond hub of Surat, which took a beating during the global meltdown, are still shying away from registration. At a four-day ‘Surat Tool Tech 2010’ machinery exhibition here,Surat Diamond Association (SDA) president Rohit Mehta said that barely 2,100 of the 4,000-odd units have registered with the association.

“We had carried out a registration drive for the factory owners earlier. But they are more concerned about the benefits they stand to derive through the registration process,” said Mehta.

SDA,which is working for the development of the industry and various other issues related to the diamond industry, has only 50 per cent of the diamond polishing units registered with the association. The association members also do not have the actual figure of the number of factories operational in Surat.

Sources said majority of the registered members are big and medium factory owners, and majority of the segment of small factory owners are still left out. About the exhibition, which starts from Friday,Mehta said: “The motive behind the exhibition is to impart the latest knowledge on tools and other machinery used in cutting and polishing of diamonds. We want to make the industry well-equipped,so that Surat emerges as a brand name in the future.”

He added: “We have set up 55 to 60 outlets dealing with various instruments associated with the diamond industry. The exhibitors will display their latest products for the benefit of the people.”
