The Vadodara Municipal Corporation is planning to crackdown on roadside vegetable markets in the city. The issue, which is forwarded to the Standing Committee,is expected to be discussed on Monday, said officials.
VMC officials said roadside vegetable markets have turned out to be a major cause of concern as they not only amount to a permanent encroachment but also create major traffic problems.
The proposal was already moved in the Standing Committee sometime back. Now that the elections are over, there are all chances that the matter would be taken up in the standing committee meeting, said Deputy Municipal Commissioner C M Makwana.
Makwana said,We want to streamline the roadside vegetable markets which have spread across the city, but the final decision will be taken only after the issue is discussed at length.
The officials at the Establishment Department, however, said a similar proposal was moved in the past but no concrete decision could be taken earlier as well.
The issue is such that it requires unanimity among the members which is not happening whenever the issue is discussed. Also, when we displace the roadside vendors, there has to be some planning to relocate them. We also need to think over having a proper vegetable market for local residents, said an official in the department.
Some of the vegetable markets in the city include markets in the areas of New Sama road,Old Padra Road,Gorwa,Karelibaug water tank,Fatehpura and Panigate. The corporation has already removed Ellora Park vegetable market near Inox multiplex.
