Welcoming the Gujarat High Courts order on the damaged and destroyed religious properties during 2002 riots, state Congress president Arjun Modhwadia today said it was for the first time that any court in the country has held negligence on the part of the government responsible for the riots.
He said the order clearly established the complete and deliberate negligence of the state government and its inaction to check the riots. Even former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee,he said, had publicly advised Chief Minister Narendra Modi to follow his rajdharma (duty) but it was unfortunate that the BJP could not take action against the CM as he was the fund raiser for the party.
The Congress leader said that had the Modi government taken action on time, hundreds of lives lost during the riots and properties worth hundreds of crores of rupees destroyed could have been saved. And Modi would also have not needed to enact the drama of holding Sadbhavana fasts at public expenses, said Modhwadia.
Modi indifferent to the poor
Meanwhile, the party accused Modi of being indifferent to the poor people. Speaking at the Hisaab Do,Jawab Do campaign here,Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil alleged that the Impact Fee Bill to regularise illegal buildings aimed to benefit builder mafias.
At the same,he said, hutments were being demolished on the banks of Sabarmati, which established that the government was indifferent to the needs and woes of the poor.
