The newly established faculty (department) on climate change studies at CEPT University has not only attracted the students but industries and private sector companies are also inquiring about the courses. The Faculty of Environment and Climate Change Studies (FECCS) will begin two programmes — a one-year postgraduate diploma and a two-year masters programme — at CEPT from the coming academic year.

While the new faculty’s dean,Professor S K Acharya, said the numbers are still not definite as the admission process is ongoing,a number of industry officials and green consultants have apparently asked “how they can participate” in the new programmes.

“Many of them (the companies) are already interfacing development and the challenges of climate change,” said Acharya, adding,“They are involved in energy and sustainable technologies, and a lot of them are also consultants.”

There is a “tremendous demand” for professionals who are familiar with and capable of climate change science, and these companies and consultants “want to bridge the demand and supply,” he added.

The FECCS will not only touch upon the science of climate change and its effects but will also delve into how human settlements, the state university’s main focus and USP,form part of the paradigm. It will therefore link itself to other faculties at CEPT like architecture, planning and public policy.

At present, the faculty is functioning independently under the university, but Professor Acharya said it is also open to cooperation with outside entities like industry and the state Climate Change Department in future. Meeta Goel,co-ordinator of the FECCS,said the faculty is “in the process of finalising and formalising our collaborations”.

According to its brochure,“the

Faculty will conduct educational programmes, training and capacity building exercises, undertake research and publication, and carry out networking and institutional cooperation”. “A specialised Centre for Climate Change Studies is also being established under the FECCS,” it adds.
