Rajkot: With no money left for wife’s treatment,an elderly couple committed suicide at Manavadar town in Junagadh district on Monday night. Their bodies were found in their hut on Tuesday morning. The police said Balvant Goswami (70) and Sharda (65) were daily wagers and living in extremely poor conditions. The childless couple had to spend a lot on Sharda to treat her abdomen tumor.

The police have recovered three suicide notes. In one of them,the couple has urged police and the neighbours to perform their last rites by selling their household goods.

“Due to poverty they were no longer in a position to afford her treatment. In one of the suicide notes,they took the extreme step to end her sufferings as they can no longer afford her treatment,” said the Manavadar police.

Two arrested for beating up couple

Vadodara: The city police arrested two persons for beating up a couple whose son had eloped with the daughter of one of the accused in Morkhala village,the police said on Tuesday. The incident took place on Monday when the couple’s son Dilip eloped with Pratapsinh Bariya’s daughter around 10 days ago. Pratap suspected Dilip had kidnapped his daughter,who was engaged to someone else,and got married. Pratap and his brother Ganpat on Monday beat up the couple and then tied them to a tree,the police said.

Both the accused were arrested on Monday.

Dilip works as a cook in a hotel in Pune and had come to visit his parents in his native village. Further probe is on,the police added.

State to organise IIT Conclave in Jan

Ahmedabad: The state government in association with Pan-IIT Gujarat Alumni Association will organise IIT Conclave Technology and Development in Ahmedabad on January 11. The focus will be on technological development and issues like educational challenges for innovation and looking for alternative approaches to secure economic leadership will be discussed. The conclave will have former Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Chief Minister Narendra Modi for discussions.
